The Oscars is just right around the corner and 9 films are vying for the most coveted Best Picture award. 2016 was a good year for films. Even with the onslaught of big-budgeted superhero and sci-fi movies, there were still great films made with only a fraction of the budget.
What’s interesting is that 5 of the 9 nominees were adapted from books or plays. What does this mean? Either Hollywood is on a dry spell for original materials, or stories based on real events are just more fascinating than fiction. In any case, we’re glad they are getting the recognition they deserve.
Here are the 5 Oscar Best Picture nominees based on previously written books and plays.
Arrival is a science-fiction film based on a short story / novella Stories of your Life and Others by Ted Chiang.
Fences is an American drama based on the Pulitzer-winning play by August Wilson.
Lion is a drama film based on a non-fiction book A Long Way Home written by Saroo Brierley.
Hidden Figures is biographical drama film based on the non-fiction book of the same name written by Margot Lee Shetterly.
Moonlight is an American drama film based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.
